Dr. Volberding is also heavily involved in advocacy having served as the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Accordia Global AIDS Foundation and the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University. He is also a board member of the Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation and an active member of the National Academy of Medicine. He also founded the International Antiviral Society-USA.

His contribution to fighting arthritis has been recognized by the Arthritis Foundation as he is a two time recipient of the Lee C. Howley, Sr. Prize for Arthritis Science Service.
